Sey Coffee // Ethiopia Duromina

Sey Coffee // Ethiopia Duromina

Duromina, which means “to improve their lives” in the Afan Oromo language, is a coffee cooperative in southwestern Jimma Zone. Coffee has grown here for generations but was traditionally processed using the dry, natural method. Farmers paid little attention to quality control. Despite an ideal climate and altitude […]

Sey Coffee Roasters // Colombia La Marimba

Sey Coffee Roasters // Colombia La Marimba

Constructed from winning lots that emerged from the inaugural Acevedo Cup competition in Acevedo, Colombia, this lot is comprised of producers from the La Marimba hamlet in southern Huila. Some well-established community leaders were in attendance and they had already decided to organize meetings among Acevedo Cup winners and their neighbors to first discuss the winners’ protocol and strategies for the winning lots, and then determine how and what strategies neighboring farms could implement to improve their own production.

Two of those leaders were locally-acclaimed producers John Torres and Maria Bercelia. Maria especially has a reputation for producing high quality lots while empowering and educating the community around her. The coffee we’re drinking today is a collaboration between the two.

Welcome to my Table, here in the corner of this cafe. Today we’re sipping the Colombia La Marimba, from Sey Coffee Roasters (formerly Lofted Coffee Roasters) in Brooklyn, New York, courtesy of Craft Coffee. Feel free to pull up a chair.

CUPPINGNOTES

The aroma of the Colombia La Marimba is bright, fragrant, and fruit-forward. Tropical stone fruit and citrus bring some liveliness amid musty wisps of black currant tea, baking spices, and sweet caramelized sugars.

The flavor is much livelier than the nose, though the notes from the aroma have carried through to the cup. It’s a lightly medium-bodied coffee that features a somewhat syrupy mouthfeel and a complex citric acidity. I’m picking up notes of papaya, apricot, orange, and nectarine, up front while heavier flavors of butterscotch, nougat, cocoa, cola, black currant, and Curacao (a liqueur flavored with the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit, grown on the island of Curacao) provide backbone.

FINALTHOUGHTS

New name – same approach to sourcing and roasting great coffees; Sey Coffee Roasters (formerly Lofted Coffee) provided us with an outstanding and uniquely profiled coffee in their Colombia La Marimba.

This was a sweet and fairly complex coffee, featuring bright and lively tropical fruit and stone fruit and thick, chewy flavors of nougat, cocoa, and black currant. The cup is structured tremendously, allowing both the bright, lively fruit flavors and the dense, heavy sugary flavors to both
